Grand Lake District Wanderer 02, October, 2017

Experience the 18th century brought to life at William Wordsworth’s birthplace and discover Beatrix Potter’s home, a fascinating time-capsule of her life. The captivating Elizabethan charm of Levens Hall has intrigued and fascinated countless generations of visitors. Travel back in time at Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway and enjoy a cruise on Lake Windermere.

Day 1: We will make your way to Cumbria arriving at our hotel in time to freshen before dinner.

Day 2: After breakfast we will travel to Ullswater for a relaxing steamer cruise on Ullswater Lake between Glenridding and Pooley Bridge. In the afternoon we make our way to Wordsworth House & Garden in the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth. Wordsworth House is the birthplace and childhood home of romantic poet William and his sister Dorothy. It is presented as it would have been in the 1770s with real food on the table. A fire burning in the working kitchen and a recipe William and Dorothy might have eaten for you to taste.

Day 3: Today we travel to the home of Beatrix Potter, Hill Top her 17th century farmhouse. The house appears as if she has just stepped out for a walk as every room contains a reference to a picture in a ‘tale’. We will also visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery; a visit here offers the chance to admire her delightful artwork and the opportunity to learn more about Beatrix Potter’s life outside the writing career that made her famous. After lunch we continue on to Kendal for our visit to Levens Hall, a magnificent Elizabethan mansion built around a 13th century pele tower. You will also be able to enjoy the world-famous award winning garden. The topiary, beech hedges and colourful seasonal beds create a stunning visual impact.

Day 4: Our tour today is a relaxing one. We make our way to the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway for our ride on a steam train from Haverthwaite to Lakeside; once at Lakeside we will join our cruise on Windermere. This spectacular voyage to Bowness will give you magnificent views of mountain scenery, secluded bays and many wooded islands. There will be free time to enjoy Bowness, one of Cumbria’s most popular destinations.

Day 5: Today we say goodbye to the beautiful Lake District and begin our journey homeward.
