alternative dates available

National Memorial Arboretum and Shrewsbury 16, October, 2017

The National Memorial Arboretum includes 150 acres of trees and memorials devoted to the concept of Remembrance. 50,000 trees have been planted and as each tree matures it will provide a variety of woodland areas and open grass spaces. The aim of this living memorial is to offer families and friends of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country a green and pleasant land to remember their loved ones.

Please note the date differs from the brochure.

Day 1 We will make our way to Tamworth and our hotel arriving in time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 2 After breakfast we travel to the National Memorial Arboretum. The National Memorial Arboretum was created in 1997 in the centre of England at Alrewas near Lichfield in Staffordshire. It is a living tribute to the personal sacrifices made by the armed and civil services of the United Kingdom. There are over 200 dedicated plots on the site to individuals and organizations including the military, civilian victims of war, the Police, Fire Brigade and Ambulance services, charities, local and overseas organisations. Buildings at the National Memorial Arboretum are the Millenium Chapel of Peace and Forgiveness, the FEPOW Memorial Building and the Armed Forces Memorial.

In the afternoon we will visit the National Brewery Museum in Burton upon Trent. The National Brewery Centre Museum incorporates large elements of the original Bass Collection. Learn about the legendary Bass family and their role in the development of brewing. The museum also celebrates the social history of the development of brewing - the real life experiences and stories of the people who helped to build Burton's world-renowned brewing reputation. You will see heritage machinery & vehicles, visit the microbrewery and there will also be the opportunity for some beer tasting.

Day 3 Our excursion today takes us to Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire, one of England’s finest medieval towns. This magnificent heritage town has over 600 listed buildings, picturesque cobbled alleys and squares and an exceptional number of interesting, independent shops that makes Shrewsbury’s shopping so special. Don’t forget to wander down to the Quarry Park, and simply watch the world go by while enjoying a drink by the river.

Day 4 We make our way today to the Shugborough Estate near Stafford, home to the Anson family since 1624 and once described as ‘a perfect paradise’. In the Georgian mansion, unearth unusual treasures and experience life ‘below stairs’. You will then enter a world of glamour and royalty in the apartments of Patrick Lichfield, 5th Earl and fashion photographer. You can explore sweeping parkland, ancient woodland and a landscape peppered with monuments; discover Park Farm, created at the cutting-edge of agricultural reforms.
