Like many British seaside resorts Southend-on-Sea thrived in the Victorian era and has continued to grow in popularity. Nestled in the Thames Estuary in Essex; with seven miles of coastline, award-winning attractions and a wealth of history and culture, it’s hardly surprising millions of people visit each year.
The iconic pier built in 1830 is famous for being the longest pleasure pier in the world, complete with its own railway; offering transport from the shore to the Pier Head. Not forgetting the pier museum, crazy golf and plenty of places to refresh and refuel.
One of the most recognisable attractions on the seafront is Adventure Island with an eclectic selection of over 40 rides and amusements, prize arcades, cafes, restaurants, sideshows and games. There really is something for all ages.
Sea Life Adventure is the UK’s first Zooquarium where you can journey around each of their ocean zones and immerse yourself in the wonders of life on planet Earth. You’ll meet famous sea dwellers including sharks and stingrays, discover weird and wonderful creatures of the deep and get to know plenty of land-loving animals too, including monkeys, meerkats and African spurred tortoises.
A much loved part of Southend-on-Sea is The Cliff Lift; a funicular railway, constructed in 1912 and recently refurbished piece of history which carries visitors from the sea front to the cliff top affording unparalleled views of the estuary.
