Spectacular Snowdonia

Day 1: We arrive at our idyllically located hotel in Llanberis in time for dinner.

Day 2: This morning we visit Caernarfon Castle, recognised around the world as one of the greatest buildings of the Middle Ages and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most impressive castles in Wales, Edward I's formidable structure on the banks of River Seiont was intended as a seat of power - and as a symbol of English dominance over the Welsh. Following our visit to the Castle we enjoy a scenic drive to Betws-y-Coed, the gateway to Snowdonia and North Wales' most popular inland resort. The magical setting with its timeless allure has a distinctly Alpine feel enhanced by the surrounding Gwydyr Forest. We enjoy time at leisure for lunch before visiting the National Slate Museum, a living and working museum that provides a fascinating insight into the history and significance of an industry that has chiselled itself into the very being of this country.

Day 3: This morning we travel to the Isle of Anglesey and nearby Beaumaris with its medieval castle, lovely beach and Victorian pier. While there we relax on a leisurely 80 minute return boat cruise to Puffin Island.  Located at the Northeast entrance of the Menai Straits this little island hosts an abundance of wildlife including Atlantic grey seals, resident coastal birds and of course puffins. We may be fortunate enough to encounter porpoise or even dolphins and you'll be entertained with light-hearted and informative commentary along the way with help spotting the different birds and wildlife throughout the voyage. In the afternoon we visit one of North Wales' best kept secrets, the hidden gardens of Plas Cadnant.  With 10 acres of gardens including a two acre walled garden, fantastic valley gardens packed with unusual and interesting plants, flowering shrubs and trees, rivers and waterfalls this fascinating haven was undiscovered for over 70 years. 
 

Day 4: This morning we travel to the unique Italianate village of Portmeirion, exploring the lovely terraced gardens, picturesque village and shops. Designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in the early 20th century, Portmeirion's Riviera inspired houses, ornamental garden and campanile are a beautiful pocket of madness like no other. After our visit we enjoy a journey on the Welsh Highland Railway, the UK's longest heritage railway and one of the most spectacular ways to see the awe-inspiring scenery of the Snowdonia National Park. Our one-way journey begins in the picture postcard riverside village of Beddgelert. Snaking through the forest and crossing the summit of the line, we pass through Rhyd Ddu before arriving at the foot of Snowdon. Our journey continues as we descend from the mountains to the coast before arriving beneath the castle walls in historic Caernarfon.

Day 5: After a delicious breakfast, we make our way home.
